Poem of Rob Schaeffer, Ph.D.

The Pipe Carriers

The pipe carriers pass among us still
Silently - soft-feathered - humbly
Chanupas cradled lovingly
Visible to all who will.

Their pace ancient and slow
Yet synced to this frenetic century
to its aspirations, and to its aspirants
to its suffering, and to its sufferers
to its healing, and to its healers.
You wonder how much they can really know
But you never, ever, ever want them to go.

Rob Schaeffer, Ph.D. is a clinical and forensic psychologist who has been active in ancient forest protection and Native American issues.  He is thankful for the many teachers who have shared with him their knowledge of Lakota spiritual practice and to the community which has allowed him to participate in ceremony.  In his life he tries to walk the Red Road.
